I don’t really take maternity photos. It’s not that I don’t like them. It’s just, as I focus more on engagements, weddings, and elopements, a lot of other things necessarily start to fall away to make room for that. But when my friend Charlene asked me to take her maternity photos, I had to say yes.
I met Charlene when I was in college and we were both teaching ESL. Her energy was so exuberant and joyful, that we became friends and made it a point to remain connected over the past decade. As I went on to become a Speech Pathologist and she went on to become a nurse, we attended the same graduate school at different times. Our paths seemed to cross and diverge in strange ways. And every time I saw her, I appreciated that bright and buzzing energy.
When she got married in a tiny ceremony at city hall, I was invited to the reception. When I arrived, I realized there was no official photographer. Suddenly I, and the tiny compact camera I had tossed in my bag, had a job to do. And thus, I accidentally photographed my first wedding!
Once I found out Charlene and Ravi were having a baby, I couldn’t wait to continue to document their life story. We took these fun maternity shots in the Boston Public Garden and then, 8 weeks later, I took newborn photos of their sweet, beautiful babe.
Charlene is such a caring person, devoted to improving our health care system in the US and in Haiti. She touches the life of everyone she meets. I love witnessing Charlene’s story as it unfolds and her family as it grows. I look forward to whatever comes next!
