Emily & João’s Intimate Family-Only Belmont Town Hall Elopement

After seven years of love and world travel, Emily & João were married in the Selectman Room of Belmont’s Town Hall.

I was expecting a brief, official ceremony, so I was touched by all the classic details, like a tiny flower girl who became suddenly shy and hid in her mother’s skirt as she came down the aisle, thoughtful comments and poetry by the officiant, and 20 of their family members bearing witness. João’s mom (who does floral design as a hobby) made a beautiful bouquet and two large flower arrangements to decorate the space.

Emily became emotional during the ceremony, surprising herself, so João gave her his navy blue pocket square to dab her eyes. After the ceremony, we all headed to Beaver Brook Reservation for portraits. After the family photos were done, Emily, João, and I wandered the park for a bit to take advantage of the red and orange foliage starting to come out in full force. Then they headed off to dinner with their family to celebrate their newly married state!

One of my favorite parts of any wedding day is reading the energy and seeing how the couple shines through. I felt this elopement had a simple elegance, from Emily’s dress – a sleek white maxi with a little mermaid flair – to her gorgeous braided updo, from the family-only guest list to the stately, but simple venue. And that simplicity and that elegance, with just the right amount of thoughtful details, allowed their genuine emotion and connection to come forward as the most important and moving part of the day. It allowed the whole thing to come together in under two months. And it kept the focus on these two people, their supportive family, and their loving commitment.
